22nd May 2010

Ben, Colouring Pencil, 20 Minutes.

2 year old are not easy to draw, they move around a lot. This was draw slowly over quite a while waiting for him to look at me again.

21st May 2010

Steph, Orange Colouring Pencil, 10 Minutes.

I've decided to do a series of portraits in order to challenge myself, I also like to experiment widely with styles.

20th May 2010

Emma, Purple Colouring Pencil, 20 minutes.

19th May 2010

Boot, Red Colouring Pencil, 20 Minutes.

18th May 2010

Hand, Blue Colouring Pencil, 15 Minutes.

I was challenging myself here by not creating the drawing by building on a line drawing, I tried to create this by drawing using nearly only tone.

15th May 2010

Greater Kudu, Brush Pen, 5 Minutes.

Lemur, Howletts Zoo, 5 Minutes.

After all the long drawings of still life objects, I wanted to challenge myself by taking on really quick drawings of moving subjects. These are the best drawings out of the set.

14th May 2010

Stone Figures, Graphic pens, 25 mins.

I've really started to enjoy using graphic pens, they have a similar quality to using indian ink, only without the drying time. I've also used a contour drawing method to try to capture the curves of the piece.

13th May 2010

Soap Cube, Colouring Pencil, 10 Mins.

12th May 2010

7th May 2010

Hand, Indian Ink Washes, 40 Minutes.

I was very happy with this one and glad that I started again. This time I was aiming to create a sense of form by using a Henry Moore style contour drawing method. To me it looks a bit like a potato and reminded me of Two Seamus Heaney poems that I studied in school, in one Heaney talks about the pen being the tool that he will wield in order to support himself as opposed to the spade that his father used; "Ill dig with it", this looks to me like the hand that would hold such a pen. In the other Heaney talks about peeling potatoes with his mother, and it being a moment of silence and closeness, this is also one of my mothers favourite poems. I hope that this image can create a resonance for other people too.

Hand, Indian Ink using a dip pen and wash, 10 Minutes.
I had the idea that I wanted to see what I could create using a dip pen and indian ink as this is a medium that one of my current favourite artists, Dave McKean, works in. I wasn't particularly satisfied so I began a second piece, the one above.

6th May 2010

Sandal, Graphite on gre paper, 15 minutes.

5th May 2010

Goblet, 15 minutes.

4th May 2010

Pencil Sharpener, 20 mins

3rd May 2010

Conical Container, 20 Minutes.

I found a number of unexpected benefits to this project. Because Im doing a piece a day I feel much freer to create work using media that I would not usually consider, this was done using graphic type pens, it really suited the object and allowed me to build up contoured hatching that effectively communicates the reflections and sheen of the metal containers.

2nd April 2010

Candle and Wooden Puzzle, 45 Minutes

I really wanted to do a proper study of light, to get an object and draw it in candle light coming out of the darkness. This is a response to Richards exhibition of Still Lives where much of the work really exploited the qualities of light. I think that it has worked out quite well, probably one of the best drawings so far. This project is really having the desired effect, I was able to concentrate very easily on this drawing, I really lost track of time and found myself absorbed in it. On the first drawing my mind was as busy as a bee hive, here my mind really settled and was as still as a lake. I'd like to do a Monet type repetitive series of one object using a selection of different lighting positions.

1st May 2010

Wooden Box, 45 Minutes

I was playing with light and dark in this picture and using a medium that i have never found particulary easy, charcoal. I've always found it messy and difficult to control, I much prefer colouring pencils for neatness and cleanliness. I find the drawing a day is encouraging me to experiment with different media as there is not the big commitment to a long and key piece of work. I think it worked out well enough, it looks a bit wonky, but the light and shade and use of the qualities of the media is quite interesting.

30th April 2010

Red Glass, 20 Minutes

I was exhausted when I drew this, couldn't even speak, but still quite enjoyed it. It is sometimes difficult to stick to a drawing a day, but it is working, my focus is definitely improving.

29th April 2010

Portrait of Brother and Sister, 20 minutes

These are 2 talented art students at my school, they were performing in the school musical and posed while they waited to go back on stage. The portraits are alright individually but don't look quite porportionally right next to eachnext to each other.

28th April 2010

Wooden Snail, 25 mins

A lovely dark form to try and capture, done in pen and brush pen.

27th April 2010

Muffin, 25 minutes
I drew this muffin ecause I thought it was an interesting collection of forms with the different textures and would really suit the colouring pencil medium. In the end I also got sucked in by the multiple overlapping shadows that the object cast.

26th April 2010

Box of Chocolates, 40 mins

I really liked the texture of the crinkley plasticy packaging with the lovely smooth chocolates, I'm not sure that I got the chocolates right, but I do like the effect I achieved on the plastic using both a pen and a brush pen.
